Hugh Vivian Taylor Award 2019

Hugh Vivian Taylor Award 2019

We are delighted to announce that on Saturday, 9th November, Marshall Day Acoustics was revealed as the winner of the 2019 Hugh Vivian Taylor Award for our work on the Ian Potter Southbank Centre, University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music.

Presented by the Association of Australasian Acoustical Consultants (AAAC), the award recognises efforts in providing innovation, promoting consulting and advancing the field of acoustics.

Since opening in March 2019, The Ian Potter Southbank Centre, the new home for the University of Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, has been identified as a significant new performance and teaching venue, hosting an array of international seminars and conferences, performances by Conservatorium staff and students as well as a full range of Conservatorium teaching.

The acoustic design of the Ian Potter Southbank Centre was developed to promote wellbeing for all occupants. This is one of the first projects worldwide to be constructed with reference to the guidelines set out in Norwegian Standard NS 8178:2014 Acoustic Criteria for rooms and spaces for music rehearsal and performance.

This project encompasses design solutions of the highest standards and has created a benchmark that will be used in the development of the new ISO standard dedicated to the acoustic quality of music education facilities worldwide.

“Nothing could fill me with more pleasure than to hear our musicians perform in world-class, state of the art facilities that encompass the most impressive acoustics I’ve ever experienced in a music building.” - Professor Gary McPherson, Melbourne Conservatorium of Music

Marshall Day Acoustics is honored to accept this award for the third time in 5 years, previously winning in 2015 for the Philharmonie de Paris project, and 2016 for the development of IRIS software.

Congratulations to all our team who were involved, but a notable mention to Peter Exton, Martin Butyn, Peter Fearnside, Tim Marks, Peter Heinze and Robert Joseph.
